Driver In Fatal Brooklyn Crash Faces Manslaughter Charges
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The driver of a car who police said caused an early morning crash Monday in Brooklyn that left one person dead faces manslaughter charges.
Ayisha Dobson of Bridgeport, Conn. faces charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, DWI, and reckless driving, police said.
Dobson, 23, was behind the wheel of a 2003 silver Nissan Altima just after 4 a.m. Monday on the Williamsburg Bridge near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, police said. The car was speeding and heading east on the Williamsburg Bridge in the outer traffic lane when it lost control near the eastbound B.Q.E. interchange, police said.
The car hit a metal divider on the passenger side, ejecting 21-year-old Janice Brown of New Haven, police said. Brown was sitting in the back seat and was thrown onto the road. The car then spun around before finally stopping facing west, police said.
That's when the Dobson decided it wasn't safe to leave in the car in the roadway and drove towards to the Roebling Street exit where she parked the car on Roebling Street near South 4th Street, police said.
Brown was found lying in the road and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Dobson and three other people who were inside the car were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The wreck forced police to close ramps on portions of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Williamsburg Bridge as they investigated the crash, which caused heavy backups during the morning rush.
