"This appears to be a targeted event," said Prosecutor Theodore Romankow. "There is no reason to believe at this point that other residents of the borough are in danger."
The shooting the quiet middle-class neighborhood appears to be gang-related, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reports.
Breyon Williams, 24, who officials said is linked to the Crips gang, was pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Howard, 24, was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Two other men, an 18-year-old from Roselle and a 25-year-old Newark resident were transported to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities are working to establish a motive for the shooting.
The gunman is still at large.
"I plead to the individual or individuals responsible to please stop," said Mayor Jamel Holley "This is an end game that leads nowhere. Violence is never the answer and an act like this, performed in rage or hatred has a ripple effect that touches many families, causes trouble and heartache. Violence is never the answer."
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Union County Crime Stoppers at (908) 654-TIPS or www.uctip.org.
