Police Investigating After Witnesses Say Multiple People Shot In Passaic

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Multiple people were shot after gunfire rang out in Passaic, New Jersey early Sunday morning.

As TV 10/55's Steve Langford reported, the incident happened at the corner of Hope and Highland avenues.

"I heard three shots," said Maximino Lopez.

Lopez said one of the victims was hit right in front of his apartment building.

"I came down, the guy was laying down in front of my Jeep," he said.

The man was gravely wounded, according to witnesses, who also said two others were hit in the shooting.

Nearly twelve hours later, police were still standing guard outside one of the homes.

As an indication of the fear that haunts the area, most people Langford spoke to who live right on the street said they didn't see anything and they didn't hear anything.

One young man, who didn't want his name used, said his mother called him to tell him not to come home.

"My mom said a car drove up and whole bunch of guys came out and a girl started screaming. Then she heard gunshots," he said.

Passaic police are tight-lipped about whether the gunman is still at large. A car was reported to have fled the scene of the shooting, Langford reported.

"It isn't the first time that we hear gunshots around here," said the young man added.

It's a neighborhood in a state of sheer trepidation, Langford reported.
