FedEx Worker Killed In Woodbridge After Being Struck By Minivan
WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Investigators are trying to piece together what caused a fatal accident that killed a FedEx driver.
The accident took place shortly before noon on Fairview Avenue and involved a black minivan and a FedEx delivery van.
Witnesses said it appeared the FedEx driver, 43-year-old William Convery III of South Bound Brook, was outside his van gathering packages from the back when the out-of-control minivan came barreling down the quiet residential block, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.
The minivan struck Convery, a married father of three, and then slammed into the delivery truck, Woodbridge police said. Convery was only driving the route Friday because he was doing a favor for a co-worker.

Neighbors ran outside after hearing the loud crash and saw the FedEx van on a lawn and the mangled minivan in the middle of the street. Jeanne Battista said a package was coming to her house when the accident occurred.
"There was just a minivan sitting out sideways in the street and somebody was pinned underneath it," Battista said. "Words can't even being to describe the way I feel right now. It happens just about right in front of your house and it just leaves you empty."
The elderly driver of the minivan was airlifted to an area hospital, Sandberg reported. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was listed in critical condition.
Officials said they will be testing for alcohol. No charges have been filed.
"He just plowed into this pedestrian. Out of control? I don't know if that's the right term," said Woodbridge Police Capt. Roy Hoppock.
Authorities said they are also not ruling out the possibility that the minivan driver could have had a medical condition or suffered a heart attack or stroke.
"Could have been any number of things," Hoppock said.
"FedEx Ground would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the driver involved in this accident. We are cooperating fully with authorities investigating the accident, but do not have additional information at this time," the company said in a statement.
Convery's stunned brother-in-law could only watch the aftermath in disbelief.
"I'm in shock still. I'm in shock still," Ricardo Urbaez said.
"The investigation is active and continuing," Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and Robert Hubner, Director of the Woodbridge Police Department, said in a statement.
Because there were no eyewitnesses, police said the minivan driver is likely the only one who knows what really happened.
