Cops: Hempstead Robbery Victim's Lighter Deflects Bullet
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A would-be robbery victim avoided serious injury Monday night after a bullet deflected off a cigarette lighter in his pocket, Nassau County police said.

The 22-year-old victim was on Morell Avenue and Morton Street around 9:21 p.m. in Hempstead when three men tried to rob him, police said.
As the victim ran from the suspects, one of them opened fire and he was shot in the right leg.
Police said the bullet hit a lighter in the victim's pocket.
The victim was treated at a local hospital for a contusion on his leg.
No description of the suspects was available.
