Police: Haverstraw Murder Suspect May Still Be Alive
HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Haverstraw police now think the Stony Point man who allegedly killed his daughter-in-law last September and fled into Harriman State Park, could still be alive.
The first face you see inside of the Haverstraw police station is Eugene Palmer's. The wanted poster is front and center.
Over the past seven months, the mystery has deepened over the fate of the 73-year-old, but it seems police might be ready to turn up the heat.
A sergeant has been quoted as saying they believe Palmer could have had assistance and was able to slip past the search parties combing Harriman.
Palmer, a cunning hunter and survivalist, vanished into the woods, but without medication for diabetes and heart disease, many wondered how long he could last.
His relatives have said they think he's dead.
But Police Chief Charles Miller says they've followed leads upstate.
"They've been up Sullivan, Ulster County looking for him," Miller told WCBS 880's Sean Adams. The family has property up that way.
That search hasn't turned up anything and the chief cautions that they have no concrete information at this time.
But they're following all leads and tips as they come in.
Palmer allegedly confessed to his family that he shot and killed his daughter-in-law Tammy following a dispute about his son, her estranged husband.
