Girl, 10, Allegedly Grabbed, Dragged And Assaulted Inside Brooklyn Building
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 10-year-old girl on her way to school said she was abducted off the street and forcibly taken into a Brooklyn building before being attacked in broad daylight on Thursday.
It was a frightening incident that took place at the Breukelen Houses in Canarsie, CBS 2's Derricke Dennis reported.
The girl said she was forced inside a building and up to a secluded area near the rooftop. Police believe the attack was carried out on an upper stairwell, leading to the roof of the seven-story public housing building.
Neighbors Describe What They Heard During Alleged Abduction
Investigators said the girl lives in another building.
They said the victim told them she was grabbed and dragged by an unidentified man, either in his mid-teens, or early to mid-20s. Sources said the suspect asked the victim "Do you kiss?" or "Have you ever been kissed before?"
The girl resisted and was struck on the head repeatedly with the attacker's shoe, CBS 2's Dennis reported, citing sources.
Witnesses said it was the girl's screams that likely scared the man off, stopping what could have led to a sexual assault.
"And we all heard the screaming because it was like loud banging on the door, and by the time we got to the door, she ran down the steps," neighbor Romaine Campbell said.
"We have a lot of children in this building -- a lot," Sheila McDuffie added.
The girl eventually ran to another neighbor, who nursed her head injury and called police.
Police are still searching for the attacker, who is described as a 6-foot black male, wearing a black shirt and black jeans. Residents have been urged keep the building's front door locked.
The 10-year-old was taken to Kings County Hospital, got stitches and was in stable condition.
