Police: Drunk Driver Slams Into Inwood Gas Station, Injuring Attendant
INWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - An Inwood man was arrested on Sunday when he allegedly crashed his vehicle into a store behind a gas station, injuring the gas station attendant.
According to detectives, 37-year-old Jorge Alvarenga was passing Burnside Avenue when his car veered off the roadway and struck barriers protecting gas pumps at a Mobil Station. The car continued motoring into a store behind the station when it struck a 46-year-old male attendant who was working, police said.
The victim was pinned between the car and store counter and was transported to the local hospital. His condition at this time is unknown.
An investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol behind the wheel, officials confirmed. A 51-year-old man was in the passenger seat of the car during the incident and is said to have non-life threatening injuries.
Alvarenga is charged with assault, reckless endangerment, aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation, having suspended registration plates, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, according to police.
