Police Cracking Down On George Washington Bridge Carpool Pickups
FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - We've been hearing from listeners that police are cracking down at the George Washington Bridge, where drivers and riders have been teaming up to take advantage of E-ZPass carpool discounts.
This has been a chronic problem and we've reported on it before.
In order to score a discounted $6 E-ZPass toll, drivers need three or more in a car. So, they pull over and pick up strangers right before the toll plaza.
But when they do this, they block a bus stop, and police have been cracking down.

Leon from Fort Lee received two tickets last year.
"They usually come, like, probably rush hour time, like 7 o'clock. This time is good, but if you get here before 6, you won't really see them," he told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. "The last time I caught a ticket I was running late, probably like 8 o'clock."
The Port Authority does not think it is safe picking up strangers, and the other big concern is that these cars block traffic and the buses have no where to pull over.
Carpoolers feel like they are being picked on and it's all just about money.
