Police: Couple Was Driving Car Full Of Heroin On L.I., With Baby Onboard
RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County police Fourth Precinct detectives were on the scene after complaints about drug activity in Ronkonkoma, and pulled over a driver who committed several traffic violations, police said.
When the detectives came up to the vehicle on Expressway Drive North, they found a strong odor of marijuana, and the passenger admitted he had just smoked some, police said.
The detectives went on to discover that the car was full of heroin, and the couple's 5-month-old son was in the car the whole time, police said.
The man – Nicholas Hernandez, 21, of Islip – was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
The woman, who apparently was driving, was faced the same charges – along with criminal impersonation and several traffic violations, police said. Police said the woman was a victim of domestic violence and her name thus was not being released, but did not elaborate.
Police did not specify why the woman was charged with criminal impersonation.
The baby was released to family members, and Suffolk County Child Protective Services was notified, police said.
