Police: Clues Emerge In Greenpoint Rape
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Critical new clues have emerged in the hunt for a man suspected of raping a woman at knife-point in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.
Java Street is typically the type of place where neighbors spend summer nights sitting out on their stoops. But, on Saturday night a man apparently raped a woman in front of an apartment building, according to authorities.
"That really bugs me out," Jean Sharer told CBS 2's Jessica Schneider on Friday night. "I'm scared to be walking down the street."
Surveillance video shows a 26-year-old woman walking when a man approaches her on her left-hand side and engages her in conversation. He then brandishes a knife and raped her, police said.
Neighbors were shocked by the crime, and told CBS 2 that they didn't hear a thing.
"It's always been quiet here. We always look behind, especially late at night, but it makes you wonder if you should be more cautious these days," Bubby Kus said.
The suspect has been described as a white or Hispanic man between the ages of 25 and 35. He was wearing jeans, a black t-shirt with a design on the front, and carrying a backpack, police said.
People who visit Greenpoint for the bars and nightlife called the attack a rude awakening.
"I'm going to walk more cautiously, that's about it," Sharer said.
