Police Say They Can't Corroborate Mahwah Campground Attack
MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities said they can't corroborate a caretaker's story that he was assaulted in his cabin at a Mahwah campground.
The man's story "has changed several times" and that investigators "haven't been able to find any physical evidence at the scene," Police Chief James Batelli said Tuesday.

The Camp Yaw Paw caretaker told police he was confronted by two men who were riding an all-terrain vehicle around 9 p.m. Monday, officials said. He claimed one of the men struck him and he fired four shots as they fled.
"Unfortunately we haven't been able to corroborate any of his statements," Batelli told WCBS 880's Sean Adams. "We haven't been able to find any physical evidence at the scene to lead us to believe that the events that he has portrayed to us occurred there. We do know he fired four shots, we do know that he has a significant laceration to his forehead. At this point, we're not sure exactly how those injuries occurred or where he fired the shots."
Police said the man told investigators he believes he shot one of the other men, but no hospitals have reported any shooting victims.
The caretaker, whose name has not been released, was treated at a hospital for the laceration on his head.
