Police Chase In Poughkeepsie Leaves Couple Dead, Children Injured
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A police chase in Dutchess County on Wednesday evening ended with a crash that killed a married couple and left their two young children hospitalized with minor injuries.
The kids are recovering after a car plowed through a red light and into their family's vehicle. Shawn and Patricia Wonderly's gold car flipped on impact.
"So now kids don't have parents because of the negligence of the other party," witness Sonia Hanna said.
Police said the incident started with officers chasing Ryan Floryan's blue Chevy. They said the suspect swerved a few times before speeding through the intersection.
"He took my son...I don't know what to say," Shawn Wonderly's father, Larry, told CBS 2's Emily Smith on Thursday.
Police shut down the intersection for five hours after the crash.
"An 8- and a 7-year-old ... they've been in an accident, they've seen carnage which no one ever wants to have to see and I'm not sure they really understand," Larry Wonderly said.
Jennifer Gibb told CBS 2 she was in the car directly behind the Wonderly's and said Thursday there was still shattered glass on her car.
"I still have chills and knowing what I know today, that those people did lose their lives and leave two kids behind," Gibb said.
When police reached the scene, they found two mangled cars belonging to the Wonderly family and the suspect.
Police arrested Floryan, who is being held on $250,000 bail.
