Police Charge Man With Murder, Assault In Brooklyn Triple Shooting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a triple shooting in Brooklyn over the weekend.
Kevon Brown is charged with five counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault, police said.
Just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, police said Brown opened fire on two men on Lenox Road in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. A 25-year-old man was hit in the torso and a 42-year-old man was shot in the torso and leg, police said.
Brown then fired on two officers responding to the scene, police said. The officers were not hurt and did not return fire.
After fleeing the scene, police said Brown shot a 24-year-old man after threatening him on the street. The bullet grazed the victim in the neck, police said.
Brown then fled the scene.
The victims were all taken to the hospital. Two were in stable condition and the third was in critical condition.
It's unclear what sparked the violence, police said.
The shooting was one of several reported over the weekend.
Police said 26 people were shot, seven fatally, in a 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday.
In the wake of the shootings, the New York City Police Department is stepping up patrols in several neighborhoods.
More uniformed officers will be assigned to public housing developments citywide and mobile and stationary observation towers will be deployed to areas near the shootings, the NYPD said.
Investigators will also monitor gang crews to try to prevent retaliation shootings.
Even with the recent shootings, the NYPD said homicides are down 24 percent from last year.
