Police: Tour Bus Crash On N.J. Turnpike Kills 2

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- State police said two people were dead following a luxury bus crash on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday night.

Authorities told CBS 2 the accident happened around 9 p.m. as the bus, which was headed from New York City's Chinatown to Philadelphia, neared Exit 9. The driver of the bus was ejected through the front windshield and killed.

Forty people were transported to area hospitals, some with serious injuries, police said.

The bus, operated by Super Luxury Tours, Inc. of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., slammed into a guard rail and a concrete abutment while traveling south on the Turnpike in East Brunswick, but it didn't flip onto its side as initially believed, police said.

The cause of the crash hadn't been determined.

The Turnpike, which handled more than 235 million vehicles two years ago, generally has five lanes in each direction. Monday night's crash closed two southbound outer lanes.

The one-vehicle crash happened just days after a bus heading into the Bronx from a Connecticut casino crashed and killed 15 people.
