Police: Body Found In Woods At Manorville Hills County Park

MANORVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman's body found by a jogger in Manorville appears to have been in a wooded area for "at least a week," Suffolk County police said Thursday.

Police said the jogger came across the body Wednesday in the woods at Manorville Hills County Park.

The Suffolk County medical examiner will determine cause of death. Police said it is not yet known whether any criminality is involved.

Police said there is no apparent link between the remains and any other cases on Long Island in which human remains were found.

"I would caution everyone about drawing connections between this case in Manorville and any of the other cases either in Manorville or cases further west," Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said. "I don't think bodies are dumped any more often in Suffolk than they are anywhere else, leaving out a potential serial killer, that kind of issue."

Fitzpatrick was referring in part to a connection between the unsolved Gilgo Beach killings and the two latest victims discovered in Manorville, which is located some 40 miles to the east. However, locals are still asking if Manorville has surfaced as a new dumping ground. The reason for that is because human remains from six different people have been found since 2000, reports CBS 2's Jennifer McLogan.

Bones from Manorville victims Jessica Taylor (2004) and an unidentified woman found in 2000 were also found at Gilgo among the 10 sets of human remains discovered there last year.

"I think I am not going out on a limb when pointing out to everyone who has probably been to most of these sites now … the one common denominator is they are both remote," Fitzpatrick said.

As for the latest Manorville cases, police said a man walking his dog on Feb. 17 came across skeletal remains in a heavily wooded area near a county park off Wading River Road. Coupled with Thursday's revelations, local residents said they are unnerved.

"It's horrible, and terrible to know that we live in this area and that it could happen here, right in your own backyard," resident Kim Lynch-Opromolla.

"It's definitely scary to think there are multiple murderers and killers out there that are hurting people," student Emily Barbarita added.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating the death of a man who was found stabbed early Thursday morning in Brentwood. Police said it does not appear the cases are connected.
