Pleasantville, Area Towns Under Boil Water Advisory Until Wednesday After Water Main Break
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Almost an entire town was without water for most of the day Monday while crews worked to repair a sinkhole and water main break in Westchester County.
The 100-year-old, 8-inch water main broke shortly after midnight on the corner of Marble Avenue and Castleton Street in Pleasantville.
It immediately impacted water pressure in the town and created a huge sinkhole that's roughly 12-feet long, 15-feet wide and about five feet deep, CBS2's Elise Finch reported.
Gushing water from the broken water main eroded the sand and concrete surrounding it, causing the pavement above to collapse.
Crews had to shut off a larger water main to stop the flow of water so they could start making repairs.
"Repair the water main, then I have to shore up the utilities, bed all the utilities in sand, then bring in k-crete, fill it in with k-crete and then put in pavement," Jeff Econom with Pleasantville Public Works said.
"So it's going to be a couple of days by the time we're finished."
"It's really, really bad and it's very inconvenient for the whole area," said Pleasantville business owner Tony Dellorso.
The water main break and resulting sinkhole are being blamed on the age of the pipes, plus normal wear and tear.
"The road is undermined so we're breaking out the pavement that's overhanging so my guys can work safely," said Pleasantville Police Chief Richard Love. "The other gentlemen are cutting off an old dresser coupling it's a clamp and that section of pipe will be replaced."
The water main was successfully replaced and water restored by the end of the day, Finch reported.
However, neighborhoods in the area are under a boil water advisory through Wednesday.
