Plan For Upper East Side Garbage Transfer Station Moves Forward
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It appears a garbage transfer station will soon be going up on the Upper East Side despite ongoing opposition from the community.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers has granted a permit for the facility to be built near Asphalt Green Park at 91st Street and the East River, CBS 2 reported.
The permit was the final regulatory approval needed for the project to move forward.
Construction could begin before the end of the year.
For months, residents have been protesting the reopening of the facility, which closed down in 1999, saying the plan would bring dozens of loud garbage trucks and foul odors to the neighborhood 24-hours a day and six days a week.
The project is part of the city's waste-management plan which was developed in 2006.
