Water from the river was chest-high on Piermont Avenue. Boats floated down the street.
Like Don Quixote, Richard Esnard and his son grabbed their own version of a lance and kept a 30-foot boat from smashing into their home.
"He and I fought this thing for two-and-a-half, three hours," Esnard said.
Public works and the fire department have been moving boats and pumping basements.
"Our DPW and our fire department, they are awesome!" said resident Michelle Brison.
Residents have been salvaging soggy belongings. Brison said neighbors have been helping each other.
"People are going to be hungry. People are going to be cold. So, we need to start putting things in place to help our residents deal with that over the next couple of days, next couple of weeks," Mayor Chris Sanders told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams.
His message to Albany and Washington: "Send help. Send support. Send money. And help these people get back, get their lives back and be productive in the county and the state."
