Report: Tom Coughlin Bows Out As Candidate For Eagles Job
PHILADELPHIA (CBSNewYork) -- It doesn't appear as though Tom Coughlin will be coaching the Eagles next year after all.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the former Giants coach is withdrawing his name from consideration for the Philadelphia job. "Not the right fit," Schefter wrote on Twitter.
There appeared to be serious interest between Coughlin and the Eagles. The two sides had ratcheted up talks after the Giants offered their head coaching job to offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, whom Philadelphia had also been interested in, according to reports.
Coughlin, 69, resigned as Giants coach last week after 12 seasons. He won two Super Bowls with New York, but his teams failed to reach the playoffs each of the past four seasons.
During his farewell news conference, Coughlin made it clear he hoped to coach again. He also interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers, but they hired Chip Kelly on Thursday.
As Coughlin's chances of finding a head coaching job dwindle, the possibility he could return to the Meadowlands increases. Giants co-owner John Mara said last week that Coughlin agreed to help the organization in some capacity, although that appeared to be a fallback plan in Coughlin's eyes.
The Eagles now must look elsewhere for their next coach. They have also interviewed their own running backs coach, Duce Staley; their offensive coordinator and interim head coach, Pat Shurmur; Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson; Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter; Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin; and Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who has since been hired as the Miami Dolphins' head coach.
Philadelphia is searching for a replacement for Kelly, who was fired Dec. 29.
