Peter Gammons Apologizes For Comparing A-Rod To Boston Bombers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Major League Baseball analyst Peter Gammons has apologized for likening Alex Rodriguez to the Boston Marathon bombers during a radio interview Thursday.
"I've had people with the Yankees say this to me: he is just -- he wants to blow up the world," Gammons said. "He's like the marathon bombers."
On Twitter, Gammons wrote that he misspoke and called it a "stupid, poorly worded" comparison.
Rodriguez, suspended 211 games by MLB amid allegations of performance-enhancing drug use and obstruction in the league's Biogenesis case, stormed out of his appeal hearing Wednesday when arbitrator Fredric Horowitz refused to force Commissioner Bug Selig to testify.
The Yankees third baseman released a statement, saying he refused to participate any further in what he termed a "farce." He then made his way to the studios of WFAN radio to state his case, slamming baseball and Selig, and denying any PED use since 2003.
"And the fact that the man from Milwaukee that put the suspension on me with not one bit of evidence — something I didn't do — and he doesn't have the courage to come look me in the eye and tell me this is why I did 211? I shouldn't serve one inning," Rodriguez told WFAN's Mike Francesa on Wednesday.
Rodriguez's legal team showed up at Thursday's grievance hearing without their star client. Attorney Joe Tacopina said they were "shutting this down."
Spokesman Ron Berkowitz said A-Rod's lawyers may go public with some evidence in the case on Friday.
