Pending Diesel Tax Hike In Connecticut Has Some Worried
HARTFORD, CT (WCBS 880) - Among those not happy to see an almost seven cent a gallon hike in the diesel excise tax in Connecticut are gasoline retailers.
They envision truckers filling up before and after they fly through the state.
That's with good reason, according to Gene Guilford head of the Independent Connecticut Petroleum Association.
"We're now going to have the highest diesel tax in the northeastern United States - 46.2 cents a gallon for every gallon sold," says Guildford.

He says without paying tolls or buying in the state, truckers will essentially be riding through Connecticut without making a contribution at all to the repair of Connecticut's highway and bridges.
That bill, he says, will come due to those who live and work in Connecticut.
"We cannot continue to rely on just the excise tax on gasoline and diesel fuel to pay for things. It makes no sense. It makes us uncompetitive," he says.
The tax hike goes into effect on July 1.
