Paterson, N.J., Couple Jumps To Neighbor's House To Escape Fire

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Paterson couple escaped their burning home by jumping from their roof onto a neighbor's roof, and climbing through that neighbor's bedroom window, witnesses said.

NorthJersey.com reported that the three-alarm fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. Friday at 887 Madison Ave. in Paterson, and damaged at least two other homes. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation on Saturday.

The neighbor, Jose Estrada, told NorthJersey.com the man who escaped the house was breathless when he came into Estrada's bedroom, while the woman appeared to be having a panic attack.

Authorities said a woman was injured in the fire, but further details were not disclosed. It also was not clear whether she was the woman who jumped to escape the flames or another resident of the home.

The fire damaged two other houses, NorthJersey.com reported.
