Parts Of Penn Station Flooded After Overnight Water Main Break
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An overnight water main break is causing some problems for commuters at Penn Station.
The main broke at around 10 p.m. Wednesday near 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, flooding parts of Penn Station
Several escalators and elevators were shut off as a safety precaution as well the cold-water supply to the air conditioning units inside the station. That means no AC for commuters going to and from trains.
"With the water on the floor, we don't want to take the chance of anything shorting out," one worker said. "Water and electricity don't match and we didn't want anyone getting hurt."
West 34th Street between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic for over an hour overnight. The water main break did not impact train service.
It took crews several hours to fix the leak.
Officials said the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak are working on ways to keep Penn Station cool until the AC can be turned back on.
