Parking Meter Rates On The Rise In NYC
NEW YORK (CBS 2 / WCBS 880) -- Drivers should grab some extra quarters if you plan on parking on the streets of New York Monday.
Thanks to new meter rate hikes, parking in Manhattan south of 86th Street increased from $2.50 to $3.00 per hour.
In locations where the rate is 25 cents for 20 minutes, drivers will only get 15 minutes.
However, some drivers will get a bit of a break because changing all those meters takes time.
The new rates won't kick in up in the Bronx until March and Department of Transportation workers in Brooklyn and Staten Island won't start changing the meters in those boroughs until April.
Getting around the city, overall, has become more expensive. Last week, Metrocard prices rose for the third year in a row, bridges and tunnels tolls are up, fares on commuter rails have also increased and the cost of gasoline isn't getting any cheaper. Now, the push is also on to hike the airport flat fare in taxis to $53 from $45.
