Parents Of Infant Killed In West New York Jitney Bus Crash File Lawsuit
WEST NEW YORK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The parents of an infant girl killed after a jitney bus sent a light pole crashing onto her stroller last year have filed a lawsuit against the driver and the bus company.
Maylin Hago and Jairo Paredes, of North Bergen, N.J. filed the lawsuit in Hudson County against bus driver Idowu Daramola, and the company that employed him, Boulevard Lines Inc.
According to police, Daramola was speeding and using his cell phone when he veered off a street in West New York and struck a light pole which fell onto a stroller, killing 8-month-old Angelie Paredes.
The bus then hit a tree, another lamppost and a parked car, which struck three other parked vehicles, police said.
Seven others were injured in the accident.
Daramola has been charged with reckless driving, using a cellphone while driving, and death by auto.
Court records showed Daramola also had two warrants out for his arrest. One was out of North Bergen, N.J. for failure to appear for a complaint on staging a commercial vehicle, while the other was from West New York for failing to pay a ticket for dropping off passengers in an unauthorized area in 2011.
A law requiring tougher regulations for jitneys was named for Angelie.
