Parades Held Across Region To Honor Memorial Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - There are many events across the Tri-State Area this weekend to mark Memorial Day.
In College Point, Queens, the annual parade stepped off Sunday afternoon. As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, marching bands have been part of the parade since 1898.
The parade featured about 1,000 participants. A World War II veteran who served in Normandy donned his uniform for the Memorial Day Parade, Miller reported.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg marched in the Forest Hills and College Point parades on Sunday.
"It's a celebration, it's a celebration of our freedoms but it's to really remember those who didn't come home," Mayor Bloomberg told Miller.
College Point Memorial Parade chairman Don Remiszewski said this year's parade is without members of the Coast Guard and Navy because Fleet Week was canceled. The federal budget cuts known as the sequester forced the cancellation of Fleet Week.
"Thank you those politicians in Washington, D.C. for that," Remiszewski told Miller.
Floats, members of the military and veterans were all on hand for the parade.
At the end of the parade route is a cemetery where Taps has been played since 1898 to remember the residents who gave their lives to protect America.
At the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's annual Summer Salute to Heroes weekend continued Sunday with concerts, demonstrations and other activities and displays.
In Westchester, a Veteran's Memorial Tribute Ceremony was planned at Rye Playland.
In New Jersey, a service was held Sunday morning at Samuel Braen Memorial Field in Haledon.
The Pompton Lakes parade was scheduled at Veterans Memorial Park, and fireworks will light up the sky tonight at Hogan Park in Northvale.
