Palisades Interstate Parkway Helix To Be Replaced As Part Of GWB Rehab
FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - One of the approaches to the world's busiest bridge is going to be replaced.
The George Washington Bridge is 82-years-old and the helix approach from the southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway is 70-years-old and has outlived its lifespan.
The approach is actually a system of three bridges and two connecting roads.

Over the next four years, the Port Authority will construct a new helix as part of a $350 million rehabilitation of the GWB.
In the meantime, they will build a temporary detour ramp for the over seven million vehicles that use that approach every year.
The Port Authority said the structural work on the bridge is necessary to ensure that it's safe and reliable for decades to come.
