Owner Of George's Diner Says Health Inspector Shut Him Down Over iPhone Photo

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Did a city health inspector get a bug up his "app" after a Manhattan diner owner took his picture?

That's what Bill Koulmentas, owner of George's Diner on Greenwich and Rector, believes.

Koulmentas told 1010 WINS' reporter John Montone that he knew he was in trouble after he used his iPhone to snap a picture of the inspector who he claims was improperly measuring the temperature of food.

That's when Koulmentas said the inspector found a cracked egg and cockroaches under the dishwasher. "I was pleading with him....man, please don't lie, please," Koulmentas told Montone.

His pleas fell on deaf ears because the inspector shut down the diner. George's regular, Charlie Siegal, said the closure was unjustified nonsense. "It has never been anything but sparkling clean," he told Montone.

In fact, according to a report in the NY Post, George's was awarded the top grade of "A" from a health inspector in August.

Koulmentas' father George, who called the diner his "baby," told Montone, "Come and inspect us but be fair."

The diner has been in business since the 1950s and reopened Wednesday.
