Overnight Fire Engulfs Home On Long Island
RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - An overnight fire ripped through a home on Long Island Tuesday, injuring at least one person.
The fire started in Ronkonkoma around 1:30 a.m. at a home on Dorchester Road, reports CBS2's Clark Fouraker.
Fire investigators are trying to answer how the fire started. They are combing through the scene which was still considered an active fire scene.
The video of the fire shows how devastating it was to the home. Local residents told CBS2 a neighbor actually called 911 after her dogs woke her up at about 1:30 a.m.
They say they don't know what exploded but the sounds woke them up. They immediately called 911 and said they could feel the heat from the fire on their front porch.
When the firefighters arrived, they said that the house was fully engulfed in flames and they had trouble finding a safe and good entry point to get inside.
Neighbors said that a father and son lived inside the house.
"We woke up to an explosion, had no idea what it was," said neighbor Gail Liebold. "My husband peeked out and saw there was a fire and I called 911."
Gail Leobold's husband Chuck rushed across the street. He knew two men, a father and son, lived inside the home. The father made it to the door.
"The door was open. He fell, he was laying in the doorway so I helped him up and brought him across the street to get him away from it," said Chuck Leibold. "There were flames everywhere. It was already done."
The son's whereabouts are unknown to Suffolk County Police, and while they are not calling that suspicious, they are looking for him.
The arson squad and the fire marshal began their investigation on the scene Tuesday morning.
