Outgoing Port Authority Exec. Dir. Won't Rule Out Run For NYC Mayor

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - There is chatter that Chris Ward, the outgoing executive director of the Port Authority, might run for mayor of New York City.

He's apparently feeling the opposite of William Tecumseh Sherman, the Civil War general who said, "I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected."

"I'm now reminded of General Sherman here at this point. Let me just say that it's obviously extremely flattering that people would consider me for a post such as the mayor of the city of New York," Ward said on Thursday. "Given the politics of this town, it's highly, highly unlikely that I would ever have that opportunity. But public service is what I've always enjoyed doing."

"All things considered, I think I'd be okay at it, but I think the timing and the politics of this town will likely preclude that opportunity," said Ward.

A reporter replied, "But you're not ruling it out?"

Ward replied simply, "Well said."

On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cumo nominated economic development aide Patrick Foye to run the Port Authority.
