Out Of This World Opportunity, Thousands Apply For One-Way Trip To Mars
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Thousands of people have signed up for a trip that is supposed to be "out of this world".
The Mars One Project is planned to launch in 2022 and wants to send a projected forty people to colonize Mars, 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported. So far some 100,000 have submitted applications.
Out Of This World Opportunity, Thousands Apply For One-Way Trip To Mars
"What we want to do is tell the story to the world. When humans go to Mars, when they settle on Mars and build a new Earth, a new planet. This is one of the most exciting things that ever happened, and we want to share the story with the entire world," Mars One CEO Bas Lansdorp told CNN.
Four interplanetary pioneers would head out on the first trip which is scheduled to leave in September of 2022. Another four would leave in 2024. Travel time is expected to be about 8-months.
Before embarking on the mission to Mars the astronauts will undergo eight years of training and will be required to carry 2500-kgs of "useful load", according to the report.
There is one catch though, this is a one-way trip.
New Yorkers seemed split over whether or not they would be able to say goodbye to planet earth for good.
"It's goofy. I live on the best planet here, why would I live somewhere else", said Casey.
Others were ready for a change of pace, and apparently a change of place.
"It's alright I've been around for 70-years. It's time for something new", said Fran.
Many experts have called the project risky and are not convinced of its feasibility. Applicants must be eighteen or older and pay an application fee.
