"There was smoke showing, no visible flame. They proceeded to stretch a line they had to force entry into the door," Freeport Fire Chief David Baer told 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg.

The charred remains of a woman were found inside the home after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Police are calling the fire a possible arson, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Police have arrested Loventino Cassadean, 49, in connection with the fire. Cassadean has been identified as the victim's husband, he will be arraigned on Tuesday.

A woman who lives down the street said she believes the victim is her 21-year-old friend.

"I recognized the house and I was just hoping and praying that it wasn't her or him but then as I came, two young guys were standing out here and they said it was a female," neighbor Elaine MacArthur told Hall.

MacArthur said her friend is married and has two children, ages two and five.

"She was going to college, she was going to Farmingdale for pharmaceutical," MacArthur said.

Neighbors told Hall the two young children are out of the country with their grandmother.

The fire has been put out but firefighters and homicide investigators from the Nassau County Police Department remained on scene interviewing people, Hall reported.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.
