Entering the tunnel from the Manhattan side, the orange partitions between lanes were intact and the tiling inside the tube seemed undamaged, Lamb reported.
However, the extent of the damage to the infrastructure will remain unknown until crews can inspect the full length of the span.
Only about a quarter of a mile into the tunnel is dry before reaching the wall of water. There is still one mile of water up to the ceiling of the tunnel all the way to Brooklyn, Lamb reported.
Crews continued Thursday to pump out the water filling the tunnel. There was no immediate estimate as to when the tunnel would be completely drained.
