Old Tappan, NJ Residents Step Up Security In Light Of Recent Burglaries
OLD TAPPAN, NJ(CBSNewYork) -- Residents of an upscale Bergen County community are locking their doors and living in fear tonight as burglaries are on the rise in Old Tappan.
Burglars have targeted houses around Northern Bergen County, and in Southern Rockland County, New York. A series of phone calls and emails recently went out to Old Tappan residents advising them to do whatever they can to make their homes look occupied.
"We always have lights that come on. I Think that maybe we will have a few more lights on inside the house than we do outside," Old Tappan resident Richard Sheldon told CBS 2's Drew Levinson.
Police said that burglars have been striking between 5 and 7 p.m., and gain entry through windows and doors. They have been taking money, jewelry, and other valuables.
Old Tappan residents were taking nothing lightly with the burglary threat looming.
"It's definitely concerning us. That's why we're putting the cameras. You know it's a big expense, but we decided it's worth it," said one woman who asked not to be identified.
