Officials Look For Ways To Reduce Speeding Around NYC Schools
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Officials are calling for ways to reduce speeding around school zones in New York City.
Sen. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) said speeding is a real problem in the city, but it can be especially dangerous around schools.
"It becomes very important when dealing with the safety of our children," he told 1010 WINS.
That's why he's introduced legislation that would authorize the use of speed cameras in New York City school zones where speeding is prevalent.
A traffic safety report released by New York City's Department of Transportation back in March found that 96 percent of cars near P.S. 81 in Riverdale were driving above the speed limit.
"I really think that if we can implement these speeding cameras, we'll alleviate the speeding problems and potentially save lives," Klein said.
DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan called speeding near city schools "rampant" and said something must be done to bring the problem "to a screeching halt."
"There is no passing grade for people speeding near our schools and putting our children's lives in danger," Sadik-Khan said in a statement.
Klein said the legislation is being considered in both the Senate and the Assembly in the final weeks of this year's legislative session.
