Officials: L.I. Child Had Strep, Not MRSA
SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- School officials have determined that a Long Island student had strep throat, not a case of the bacterial infection MRSA.
The Countrywood Primary Center in the South Huntington district school said Wednesday that a doctor had initially suspected MRSA "was a distinct possibility," but tests came back negative.
A day earlier, school officials sent a letter to parents of K-2 students alerting them that a child was being treated for a suspected case of MRSA.
MRSA is a drug-resistant staph infection that can be transmitted through contact sports.
