"We've had a marked increase in burglaries and typically, at this time of the year, we see an increase each and every year and that is because of the time change," said Wyckoff police chief Benjamin Fox. "Because of the hours of darkness and because people kind of make themselves a potential victim not lighting their homes."
Fox suggests home owners set their lights on timers.
Officials said the holidays, a high unemployment rate and a growing demand for prescription painkillers could also account for the rise in break-ins.
In Kinnelon, police say prescription painkillers have been targeted by relatives, housekeepers, and contractors.
The Record found burglaries are up in Fort Lee, Ridgewood, Demarest, Englewood, Wayne, Tenafly, Paterson, Pequannock, and Hackensack.
In Wyckoff, a doctor accused of practicing medicine out of her home without a license is also charged with stealing bikes, a laptop and patio accessories from neighbors.
