Authorities say the off-duty officer was sitting in his personal car on Avenue A when two men walked up to him Saturday morning and tried to carjack him.
One of the carjackers pulled a gun and the off-duty cop pulled his own revolver and fearing for his life, fired one shot while staying behind the wheel of the car, according to officials.
The suspects then fled in a second car that slammed into a parked vehicle on Emmett Street where a woman standing outside witnessed the crash.
"It slid into the SUV that was parked and I saw the two suspects flee from the car and as soon as that happened, I called 911 and went into the house," she said.
The suspect who was shot in the chest is in University Hospital. The second suspect is still at large.
