An administration official familiar with the matter says the woman's request is being considered.

Maj. Gen. Glenn Rieth decided to step down after he was reportedly seen in his office having a "physical relationship" with the aide.

Rieth, who is married, told Gov. Chris Christie what happened and said he's quitting in two weeks.

Christie released a statement saying, "This is obviously a difficult time for his family and Gen. Rieth did the right thing by stepping down to address this as a personal matter."

His retirement is effective Dec. 15. He was appointed in 2002 by former Gov. James McGreevey.

Christie was especially close to Rieth because they were raised in Livingston, just outside Newark, and their families knew each other.

The woman is also married and she and her husband are friends with Rieth and his wife.
