Officer Threatening Self-Harm Prompts Newtown School Lockdown
NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The middle school and high school in Newtown, Conn., were briefly locked down Monday, after authorities learned a Norwalk police officer who had threatened to harm himself was headed to his wife's home in the town.
Police said the "lock-ins" Monday were lifted after the officer surrendered to police surrounding his wife's residence. Police seized a handgun and shotgun, but they say the Norwalk officer never threatened police with them.
The officer was taken to Danbury Hospital for evaluation, police said.
School officials said the lockdown Monday morning was a precaution taken on the advice of police. A Newtown police spokesman said in a press release that no threats were made against the schools and they were never in danger.
