Officer Shoots, Kills Dog That Attacked In Brentwood, Long Island
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A police officer shot and killed a stray dog on Long Island Tuesday, after the dog allegedly attacked him.
Someone called 911 around 5:40 p.m., after seeing the dog walking and growling at people at a car wash at 3rd Street and 5th Avenue in Brentwood, Suffolk County police said.
The dog ran across 5th Avenue when police came to the scene. The 911 caller gave the dog some food and the dog sat down, police said.
The officer tried to look at the dog's tag, but the dog promptly attacked the officer and bit him, police said. The witness and the officer tried to kick the dog, but the dog would not relent, so the officer shot the animal, police said.
The dog fell, but got up and attacked the officer a second time, so the officer fired again and killed the dog, police said.
The dog bit the officer several times in the legs and hand and was treated at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said. The 911 caller was not bitten.
The tag on the dog did not specify the owner. The breed was not known Tuesday night, police said.
The dog had a purple collar and chain around its neck, police said.
