In an emotional ceremony at NYPD headquarters, Officer Glenn Estrada was promoted to Detective for his bravery in chasing down the man accused of killing his partner, Officer Peter Figoski.
"In recognition of his extraordinary bravery,it's my honor to promote Officer Glenn Estrada to the rank of Detective," said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.
Inspector Jeffrey Maddrey, Estrada's superior in the 75th precinct, was also promoted to Deputy Chief for guiding his officers in the emotional aftermath of Figoski's murder.
"It's a good day," Maddrey told CBS 2's Kristin Thorne. "It's with a heavy heart, but it's a good day."
Investigators say Estrada heard the gunshot that killed Figoski as they both responded to a home invasion in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn on Dec. 12.
Estrada didn't waste a second running after the accused trigger man Lamonte Pride, tackling him to the ground and putting him in handcuffs.
A moment of triumph that quickly followed by a forever of pain.
"My heart is with the Figoski family," said Maddrey.
But even in that, the department is finding strength. Maddrey says the men and women of the 75th precinct are doing what they can to support each other through this tough time.
