Off-Duty Police Officer Catches Bank Robber In The Act
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Staten Island man was charged Tuesday with robbing two banks in his home borough, after an off-duty police officer allegedly caught him in the act.
Edward Trifeletti, 35, was charged with two counts of robbery and one of grand larceny for each bank robbery.
Police said Trifeletti robbed the Chase Bank at 2626 Hylan Blvd., in the New Dorp Beach section of Staten Island, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He allegedly announced a robbery and demanded money, within earshot of an off-duty NYPD officer who happened to be at the bank at the same time.
Officer Richard Ocasio was at the teller window next to Trifeletti, and immediately identified himself and arrested the suspect, police said.
In that incident, he passed a note and fled with undetermined amount of money, police said. A surveillance image was released Monday night in connection with that incident.
