The officer was crossing Bloomfield Avenue when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver around 5 a.m., Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in a release.
The accident left the officer lying in the middle of the five-lane road as the silver Toyota Corolla sped off, but because the officer was with colleagues from the Northern State Prison, those officers pursued and arrested the driver two blocks away.
The windshield was smashed in and the car had front-end damage.
Official said the victim was rushed to University Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The accident remains under investigation.
