Occupy Wall Street Prepares To Celebrate One Year Anniversary With Call To Action
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Monday will mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the Occupy Wall Street protests, but Occupiers are getting the celebration started early.
On Saturday members of the movement held teach-ins, assemblies, and workshops in Washington Square Park. A group of about 250 people, accompanied by police, then marched from Washington Square Park toward Zucotti Park. Police intervened twice during the march and made arrests, by 7:30 p.m. at least eight people had been arrested, according to the New york Times.
The first arrest occurred at around 6:30 when police entered the crowd and pushed a man up against a wall, minutes later a group of five men were handcuffed in the back of a police van, the Times reported.
Later during the march police identified and arrested individual protestors, witnesses told the Times.
On Sunday the group plans to hold concerts and speak-outs that will serve as a call to action to help the 99% and tax millionaires. These will occur at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan.
