NYU Student Arrested In North Korea, Accused Of Illegally Crossing Border
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYU student was being held in a North Korean jail Saturday, after allegedly entering the country illegally when he crossed the border from China.
Won Moon Joo was arrested last week, CBS2 reported.
Joo, 21, was being questioned by North Korean state authorities, who said he "admitted" he had broken the law.
NYU released a statement saying Joo, whose permanent address is in Tenafly, New Jersey, is a junior at the Stern School of Business. He has not taken classes this semester.
"When we heard the news reports, NYU got in touch with the student's family to express our concerns over his welfare and to convey our support. His well-being is in our thoughts and prayers," NYU spokesman John H. Beckman said in a news release. "NYU has been in touch with the US State Department about this matter, as well as the South Korean embassy."
