NYPD Pulls Off Dramatic Rescue Of Father, Son Stranded On N.J. Jetty
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD Aviation Unit conducted a dramatic rescue Thursday afternoon, bringing a stranded father and son to safety in Perth Amboy, N.J.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a distress call on a rock jetty in the Raritan Bay around 2:30 p.m. Timothy Shanahan, Sr., 65, and his 22-year-old son, Timothy Shanahan Jr., had gone out fishing and were subsequently stranded for an hour on their boat. They were unable to get to shore due to heavy winds and rough surf.
Pilot Det. Dennis DeRienzo, co-pilot Det. Erin Nolan, SCUBA divers Det. Brian Singer and Det. Francis Vitale, along with Officer Matthew O'Donohoe and Officer Gowdat Nagi, departed Floyd Bennett Field and spotted the 26-foot leisure boat.
Detectives Singer and Vitale were deployed from the helicopter's hoist on to the boat.
The elder Shanahan was lifted to the chopper in a rescue basket and transported to a waiting ambulance. His son, assisted by Singer and Vitale, was able to climb to shore.
Both men were treated and released in good condition. The Coast Guard and the Perth Amboy Police Department's Marine Unit were working to recover the boat.
