NYPD Sends 2 Dogs To Aid In Washington Mudslide
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD has sent two dogs to help with recovery efforts at the Washington state mudslide.
The German shepherds, 6-year-old Hondo and 3-year-old Timoshenko, flew to the small Washington community with their police handlers, Detective Patrick Nee and Police Officer Benjamin Colecchia.
The NYPD released photos of them leaving from John F. Kennedy Airport Thursday morning.
They are part of "New York Task Force 1,'' a disaster response team with members from the NYPD, the FDNY and the Office of Emergency Medicine.
The team includes doctors, paramedics, K-9 specialists, structural engineers and hazardous material technicians.
The task force has previously helped out during the earthquake in Haiti, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Oklahoma City bombing.
The March 22 mudslide has claimed 30 lives. Fifteen people remain missing.
