"Somebody was fighting, the next thing you know we heard someone say, 'Help, 911 they're trying to shoot me,'" witness Juan Rivera told CBS 2's Weijia Jiang.
The officers heard gunshots and when they got to the scene they saw a 28-year-old victim and 50-year-old suspect struggling over a gun, police said.
The robbery victim yelled to the officers for help and police said that's when the suspect fired one shot at the officers.
The officers returned fire, striking the suspect in the torso, police said.
He attempted to flee, but was found hiding under a vehicle in front of 545 Dumont Avenue, where a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver was also recovered, police said.
The suspect was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The robbery victim suffered cuts and bruises during the attempted robbery, police said.
One of the officers was treated for ringing in the ears.
